Parallel Workshop #1: " Mentoring Students: Strategies for Success"
Dr. Maggie Werner-Washburne, University of New Mexico
In a world filled with media distractions, how do we help students understand the beauty of our disciplines? How do we help students discover what they love and commit to their path? The approach I have used with my 500 mentees not only helps students understand that their education and future is in their hands, but also gives them tools for success. Let's launch an ongoing discussion on developing approaches to mentoring UTEP students.
Dr. Maggie Werner-Washburne is a Regents Professor of Biology at the University of New Mexico, the Director of UNM's Initiative for Maximizing Student Development, and past president of SACNAS (Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Latinos and Native Americans in the Sciences). This workshop targets part/full-time faculty and graduate student instructors of all disciplines and is supported by the BUILDing SCHOLARS grant and CETaL.
