Using Technology in Your Teaching

  • Dr. José Bowen, Dean of the Meadows School of the Arts and Professor of Music at Southern Methodist University, is a proponent of judicious use of instructional technology and of “teaching naked” (meaning, without instructional technology when it’s not needed). The abstract and handout that follows was part of his plenary presentation at the TX Faculty Development Network Conference in 2010.
  • Blackboard Course Delivery Platform. The UTEP Academic Technologies staff can help you with any questions you have about teaching with Blackboard fully online, in a hybrid format, or as a class enhancement tool. Visit the Academic Technologies and FIT lab websites for more information on Blackboard and request a course shell for your class.
  • Classroom Response Systems. In cooperation with Academic Technologies, CETaL can make a limited number of Turning Point receivers and software available faculty to check out for the semester if they want to use clickers in their classes. Faculty teaching large classes (more than 100 students) will be given priority.
  • Presentations on Instructional Technology Tools. The Academic Technologies website contains numerous documents on various instructional technology tools such as Captivate, Dreamweaver, Elluminate, Raptivity, Turnitin and others. Further help on how to use these tools is available in the FIT lab at 747-5940.
